For the past 24 hours, our Year 12 students have been running, cycling and swimming in the annual Lap It Up fundraiser. The weather yesterday was not kind to the participants with rain falling (sometimes quite heavily) from earlier yesterday as well as the early hours of the final day. However, this did not deter the students and staff from participating. Friday morning broke to clear skies and a chill in the air. Although freezing cold, all the students arrived at 8:00am for the all-hour walk to wrap up the 24 hours.
The students raised close to $20,000 this week for charities such as the Edmund Rice Foundation, JCP Youth and Eddie Rice Camps just to name a few. These activities can not function without the generous support of staff on duty. Staff stayed all through the night and stepped in to swim in the 2:00-3:00am shift. Thank you to all of our local sponsors that contributed to making this event such a success.
These activities underpin the Catholic Values and Mission of service and servant leadership that we strive to instil in our students so they can contribute to society in a positive and meaningful way.
Before I conclude this short piece for the newsletter, I acknowledge the services of Fr Mark Freeman who is moving to the Bellerive-Lindisfarne Parish at the end of October. Fr Mark played a role in my appointment at the College, and as a member of the College Board, has been instrumental in providing guidance for many years. He has been a constant for the College, and we have been truly blessed by his wisdom and humour.
God Bless.

Notification if Not Returning to St Patrick's College in 2023
The College is currently developing classes for 2023. As part of the planning process, we ask that families notify the College if their child(ren), in Years 7-11, are not returning. This may be because they are transitioning to another educational institution or a workplace. This notification is required by Friday 23 September 2022. If notification is not received by this date, the 10-week late notification fee (as noted in the Terms and Conditions of Enrolment) will be imposed unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as students leaving for full-time employment. Waiving this late fee will be approved at the discretion of the Principal.
A response is only required if your child is not returning to St Patrick’s College in 2023. The enrolment of students continuing at St Patrick’s College next year will be progressed automatically. We do, however, request you read the College’s Terms and Conditions of Enrolment and Student Health and Safety Agreement to ensure you remain familiar with these important documents.

Boys @ Work
The Middle School is once again holding its successful Boys @ Work event in the week before Father’s Day.
Boys @ Work is focused on further developing the relationship between Middle School boys and the adult males in their lives but in a way that will see them working together through various hands-on activities which involve teamwork, communication and some good, friendly competition. The activities feature construction, music and physical activity. They are designed to open channels for stronger communication and develop behaviours that help build healthy emotions through a boy’s journey into adulthood. To ensure we have the necessary resources to undertake the construction activities, we ask that some adults, or students, bring some of their tools such as a set of screwdrivers, spanners and allen keys if possible. *Please no power tools.
All Middle School boys and their chosen adult male (Father, Grandfather, Uncle, etc.) are invited to attend this event on Tuesday, 6 September.
Please RSVP online (Google Form) by Sunday 4 September. If you have any questions about the evening, please contact Mrs Carmen Robotham at carmen.robotham@stpatricks.tas.edu.au or 6341 9988.

Lap It Up XIV
Sleep deprivation, weariness, and brain fog describe how I am feeling as I write this report, so I cannot imagine how our Year 12 students are feeling at the conclusion of Lap It Up XIV this morning. The Year 12 Class of 2022 has successfully managed and participated in the 14th annual Lap It Up relay-style triathlon, once again showing their sense of community and connection.
The weather was not always kind to the students over the course of the 24 hours, but their spirits were never dampened. This discomfort also highlighted the struggles many in our community experience. The aim of Lap It Up is to financially support charities that aim to make a difference in people’s lives. This year the funds will go to:
Edmund Rice Foundation Australia
JCP
Magnolia House
Edmund Rice Camps
Strike It Out
Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (Sri Lanka)
While we do not have a final total, we are confident the students, with business support, have raised around $20,000. I look forward to sharing the final total with the community as soon as possible.
Congratulations to the winning House, Tenison Cotham, with the highest average individual sponsorship, and our Eyles-Jackson 500 Challenge recipients, for individual students who raise $500: Sophie Blanshard, Morgan Brown, Kalani Cianta, Isabella Johnston, Elizabeth Hannah, Cooper Heerey, Jorja Love, Olive Morris, Kyle Petrusa, Sophie Roberts, Ben Saunders, Emily Willis.

Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme – TasBGAS
Since 2019, St Patrick's College has supported the building and construction School Based Traineeship program delivered by the Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme (TasBGAS).
The Building Futures School Based Traineeship Program is an industry initiative and is delivered by TasBGAS. It is designed to create opportunities for entry-level training in the Building and Construction Industry.
The goal is to assist students in achieving their career goal of an apprenticeship and provide the building and construction industry with high-quality skilled potential apprentices for their business. The program is undergoing significant improvements and expansion in 2023 and beyond.
TasBGAS will be the employer and RTO of the successful trainees and provide mentoring support throughout the traineeship. This will ensure consistent management of the program and the students. Trainees are paid to complete a Certificate II in Construction from the commencement of Year 11.
This Certificate II in Construction program will deliver training in 15 units across a two-year period, including a minimum of 10 weeks of on-the-job work and training per year!
This program has had a higher than 60% success rate, with participants moving into full-time apprenticeships within their chosen trade.
A vital part of the program is sourcing small and medium-sized businesses to provide work experience placements and to take on an apprentice.
The School Based Apprenticeship in Certificate II in Construction is completed as part of the student's normal study timetable, which includes:
Work placement for a minimum of 10 weeks across the school year, which is completed in blocks of time each term. This supports the trainee's ability to experience the full end-to-end process of different parts of a building project.
All training materials, textbooks and personal protective equipment.
Earning a wage throughout their participation in the program.
Training in Certificate II in Construction, completed by TasBGAS (RTO 60035) on-site with some classroom-based sessions. TasBGAS trainers also visit the College to support students in their study lines.
Applications are now open for 2023, to register please contact Kane Sanders on 0448 475 554 or k.sanders@tasbgas.com.au or see Ms White in Future Pathways.

Music has been busy these last few weeks with preparations for the James Morrison Concert, St Cecelia Performance Challenge and of course, all the live music provided to the House fundraising days.
It’s a vibrant place with students continuously participating in projects. One area of ability the College is blessed with is the abundance of able musicians always willing to put their hands up to be involved in the College’s House Mass or House fundraising days. These might be a simple acoustic act or more complex such as a choir or orchestra performance. The projects that our students participate in also extend to activities like supporting Rural Youth in the annual AGFEST clean-up. This is coordinated by the Friends of Music as a fundraiser and took place on Sunday morning in the sunshine and the mud following the close of the field days. We had over 30 members participating in the cleanup, ensuring the sites were left clean.
What a privilege it has been to work with international artist and music educator, Mr James Morrison AM. James’ passion and enthusiasm for sharing quality learning and performance opportunities are renowned. On Saturday 20 August, the Concert Band, Green Berets’ Drumline and Big Band had the opportunity to perform with James on stage in a very special ‘One Night Only’ event.
In the leadup to the concert, James worked remotely with guest tutors, and teachers, who then took those opportunities to prepare our young musicians.
With over 600 people in the audience, it was a wonderful celebration of dedication, enthusiasm, skill and a love of music. In the first session, James was supported by the College ensembles. In the second session, the audience and students were treated to a wonderful setlist of great Jazz standards and numbers like Take The A Train, and There is No Greater Love, which featured masterful solos by quartet members Mr William Morrison, Mr Anton Schulz and Mr Patrick Dando.
Another special highlight of the event was the invitation of Music Captain Charlton Allen to join James and his band on stage as a guest soloist. This was a surprise for Charlton who knew nothing about this until the intermission. Charlton did himself proud, and I know that James was suitably impressed.
During the morning, James held a public Brass Workshop with various participants travelling from all over the state. James took the group through the fundamentals of brass playing, provided them with some warm-up strategies and answered plenty of questions about all aspects of playing music.
The St Patrick’s College students also had the opportunity to share in a Q&A session with James – taking the time to ask questions such as how to get into the professional music scene, why he does what he does, and of course the crowd favourite how do you play those high notes!
The event was a wonderful success that would not have been possible without the help of our Arts Administrator Mrs Cathy Ford, the Acting Deputy Principal - Administration & Community, Mrs Kim McInnes, the Community Engagement team, our wonderful parents and the College community.
Broadway
By Ms Hannah McCarthy-Oliver, Cultural Co-curricular Coordinator
BROADWAY - The Play, was performed by the TASC 3 Theatre Performance class on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 August.
This show was an ensemble piece that paid homage to the world of ‘The Great White Way’ and the many performers who hoped to realise their dreams there. We, symbolically, opened a number of stage doors to some of the theatres of this iconic location and performed plays and musicals that have been housed there.
Expressed in abstract ways, we explored key themes often found in musical theatre shows including pathos, love, loss, rags to riches, beating the odds, bravery and just entertainment for entertainment's sake. It was a challenging, yet fun and successful experience for all. We now move our focus to our examination piece, Cosi. Thank you to all involved.
Students involved in the Future Sounds Rock Challenge had a big week with the heats to get into the next round.
Students were judged upon three criteria; musicianship, composition and performance. The winners will represent the College at the Tasmanian Rock Challenge Northern Heat next Friday 9 September at 5:00pm at the Launceston Conference Centre (Door of Hope).
Please join us and cheer them on – tickets are available online at www.bit.ly/3aHQzUw
Netball Captain's Update
By Olive Morris, Netball Captain
As we reach midway through Term 3, it is exciting to reflect upon the Netball successes over the term so far.
Our SATIS Senior 1sts team is currently sitting on top of the NSATIS ladder, as is the Senior 2nds Green team. Senior 2nds Gold is positioned in fifth, with a narrow loss of 4 goals to Grammar last week. Both Seconds Green and Gold have three games left before finals begin. The 1sts have only one more game until finals, and we will be travelling to Burnie to face Marist Regional College in Week 7.
Our NHSSA teams have also seen success within the season so far. Our Year 8 Junior 1sts Gold team has not yet lost a game and took out their most recent game by a 37-goal margin. The Years 9/10 Senior 1sts have only lost one game so far, and narrowly defeated Grammar by one goal on Saturday. The roster has two rounds remaining before the Grand Finals. With 11 teams from the College in the competition, we should see numerous teams contending in finals over the next few weeks.
With only a few rounds left before finals, hopefully we can continue our success and great sportsmanship both on and off the court.
Week 5 Sports Update
By Mr Craig Boon, Sports Coordinator
Well done to our Years 7/8 Girls Green Soccer team who won the NSATIS final against our Gold team 3-1 in an entertaining match worthy of a grand final. Mr Stuart Ralph was in charge of the winners (wearing white tops, photo below) and Andrew Agardy the runners-up.
Congratulations!
In the Boys NSATIS final our Red team lost to a very strong Grammar team but put in a great effort and enjoyed a very good season under the leadership of Mr Rory Russell. Congratulations to the boys on finishing runners-up.
Soccer
In other matches, Boys 1sts defeated their closest competitor in Grammar 4-1.
Boys 2nds White defeated Grammar White 2-1, and Green went down to Grammar Black in a high-scoring affair 4-7. Boys 2nds Gold and Girls 1sts both had a bye.
Hockey
Our Boys 1sts had a 1-nil win over Grammar and our Girls 1sts defeated QP 4-2 and will face them again in the grand final on Sep 5 with the final round of roster matches on Monday night (Aug 29).
U/16 Girls won again, 5-0 over Grammar to cement their position on the top of the ladder and U/14 Boys went down to SOC 1-6 in a top-of-the-table clash.
Netball
NSATIS – Our 1sts (minus captain Olive Morris) looked very polished in a 53-23 win over 2nd placed Grammar on Monday. It was great to see a Year 9 and a Year 10 in Paige O'Neill and Sophie Blackberry in the scoring positions. This is shaping to be a special team for this year and the next few.
Both our 2nds teams won with Gold defeating SBC and Green defeating LCS.
NHSSA – A very successful round last Saturday with six wins and a draw against opposition schools, one all-SPC clash and one result to come.
Football
Year 9/10 Boys had the bye and will play Kings Meadows in their semi-final.
Year 7 Boys have a comfortable lead over Kings Meadows at the time of writing.
