Principal's Message

Celebration, Remembrance, Reflection

Mr Tony Daley, Principal

By Mr Tony Daley, Principal

Last week I had the privilege of opening and attending the College Art Show.  While I attest the invitation did not come because of my artistic ability, I certainly appreciated the level of artistic talent of our students and how what they produced tells a story. Sometimes it's deep and reflective, while other times it can simply make you feel good or stimulate a reaction.

Every year I have been amazed by the standard and class of the artwork produced. We are so lucky to have teachers who are exceptional artists in their own right. They develop the student's technical skills, while at the same time ensuring their creativity is nurtured to the highest order.

On Friday 11 November, we commemorated Remembrance Day with a Ceremony to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty, and placed crosses at the front of the College as a visual reminder of the sacrifices made.  We continue to be grateful and thankful to live in a country blessed with peaceful times.

The Year 9 students have recently participated in a Rite Journey 24-hour solitude camping experience under the supervision of their Rite Journey teacher. Research has shown that there are many positives to be gained by teenagers having this opportunity, including a time of personal growth, the peacefulness of a solo experience being healthy, healing and rejuvenating, taking a break from the fast pace of life, unplugging from the digital world and being present. We can all benefit from silence and solitude from time to time.

God Bless.

Drama, Theatre Performance, Dance and Art Works on Show

Mr Cameron Ivory, Head of Learning – Creative Arts

By Mr Cameron Ivory, Head of Learning – Creative Arts

Term 4 is always a busy time in the Creative Arts when we see the culminating performances and displays of all our students.

Our Senior Drama and Theatre Performance exams were on Saturday 22 October and then the next night, Senior Dance put on a great night with a preview of their exam pieces, which took place that Tuesday. There were some compelling and emotive performances during both evenings and some fantastic ensemble and solo work. During that same week, our Music students performed for their exams on campus and at the Annexe Theatre. On Thursday 3 November, we celebrated the hard work of all our Senior Visual Art students with the opening of their end-of-year Art Exhibition. This event is an opportunity to celebrate our senior students' work in all the Creative Arts. Attendees were again treated to a vast array of artworks exploring ideas such as identity, the environment, abstraction and the human psyche with photography, painting and sculpture being the dominant mediums used by students this year. Our Principal, Mr Tony Daley, spoke on the night, followed by this year's Art Captain, Charlotte Worsley. I would like to thank everyone who joined us to celebrate those who have worked so hard to make these events a wonderful success.

The Croagh Patrick Art Show was held on Friday 11 November, where the work of our Year 9 students was exhibited.

A notable feature of the evening was that attendees were able to bid to purchase pieces, with all proceeds going to the Vinnies Soup Van. Thank you to Mrs Jill Crawford for all her time and hard work in making this event successful. This week, our Year 9 performance arts presented their final pieces for assessment with the Year 9 Open Windows evening.

Next Tuesday, we look forward to seeing the creative stage works devised by our Years 7 and 8 students for the Middle School PArts evening.

Again, a huge thank you to everyone involved and congratulations to all our students.

Charlotte Hutton

Congratulations Charlotte Hutton

Last week Charlotte got the exciting news that she has been selected to attend next year's National Gallery of Australia Summer Scholarship from 15-23 January. This scholarship is designed to give young people a behind-the-scenes look into the National Gallery and an insight into the many careers revolving around the Visual Arts – artist, conservator, curator, designer, educator, publisher... the list goes on. Two Year 11 students from each state and territory are selected to participate in an all-expenses-paid week in Canberra and entry to exhibitions and workshops at the NGA. Charlotte had to develop a creative response to the work Giraaru Galing Gaanhagirri, 2022, by Joel Bray of Wiradjuri Country. She then had to write a 500-word statement outlining how her work responded to Bray's work. Congratulations, Charlotte, and enjoy this amazing experience.

Creation of Croagh Patrick Fire Pit

Ms Tracey Owers

By Ms Tracey Owers, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Student Success

Year 8 students Dylan Dornauf and Sean Freeman spent last Thursday working with Mr Thomas and Mr Hume, creating a fire pit that will feature in a newly created gathering space at Croagh Patrick.  This space will be used for Rite Journey and will also feature as a part of our journey through the bush block, which we hope to regenerate and use as a cultural and educational space.  Dylan and Sean's input on design and construction was so valuable, and it will be a wonderful and culturally significant addition to the landscape of Croagh Patrick.

Dwelling Design for Wellbeing

Mr Paul Thomas

By Mr Paul Thomas, Head of Learning – Technology

Recently, Mr Paul Thomas’ Year 10 Housing and Design students had the fantastic opportunity of presenting their designs to Launceston's Mayor and Old Collegian, Mr Danny Gibson.

The design brief was to 'Design a small home to be built in the backyard of an existing residence that promotes wellbeing'.

This was followed by a student-led Q&A session on future subdivisions and innovative house design.

Launceston Parish Bulletin – 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

By Fr Ben Brooks (13 November 2022)

As this liturgical year draws closer to its end with the Feast of Christ the King next week, the readings we encounter in the liturgy of the Word become increasingly ominous. This week's Gospel includes a warning to watch out for signs, such as the destruction of the temple, an end to peace, persecution and natural disasters, which point towards an ending. In fact, what is described seems like the end of the world. We might look at today's world and think that this is not an inaccurate description of what many on the planet experience as they face lives full of poverty, uncertainty and fear.

But in the midst of all this chaos, Jesus gives an assurance that he will provide all that we need in order to survive the troubles that we face - we aren't alone. Ultimately, Christ will triumph over evil, which we celebrate next week. Following this, we move into a new liturgical cycle and begin the season of Advent in which we refocus our prayer on the coming of Christ, who offers peace in our often complex lives.

Sports Update

Mr Craig Boon, Sports Coordinator

By Mr Craig Boon, Sports Coordinator

The College enjoyed a very successful weekend at Basketball Tasmania's Northern Secondary Schools Championships.

We took out two Division 1 titles and finished runners-up on three occasions.

We won the Boys 9/10 Div 1 title in an excellent performance 66-40 over Scotch Oakburn College.
The team was coached by Mr Harri O'Toole. The entire squad of 11 played their part, but a special mention goes to Oliver Baldock, who was outstanding with 36 points of his own, and he also brought other players into the game.

We won the Boys 7/8 Div 1 title 47-28, with our Green team defeating our Gold team in the Grand Final, so we were also runners-up.
The Green team was coached by Mr Scott Brown, and Mr Angus Kitson filled in for the Gold team as regular coach Mr Cameron Bailey was unwell.

We finished runners-up in the 7/8 Div 1 Girls competition going down to Scotch Oakburn College by 4 points 19-23. The team was coached by Ms Gina Poulton.

We also finished runners-up in the 9/10 Div 1 Girls competition going down to Riverside High School 25-49.

In Div 2, we were runners-up in 9/10 Boys (coach Mr Harri O'Toole) and 7/8 Girls (external Coach Ms Tanya Coombs, Manager Mrs Shayne Russell)

The State Titles will be held in Launceston on November 26/27, and our successful boys teams and our runner-up Div 1 girls teams will all be competing.

Year 7/8 Cricket

Our Year 7 Green team defeated Scotch Oakburn College on the Old Boys oval last Saturday.
A big thank you to Mr Simon Austen for stepping in to look after the team for the day.

Our Year 8 Green team 9/188 defeated our Gold team 7/105.

The final round matches are this Saturday.

Our two Year 8 teams will meet in Wellbeing on Thursday 24 November, in a match that may decide who goes through to the Grand Final against Scotch on 26 November (depending on this weekend's results).

Rowing

The competition season kicks off with All Schools Regatta 1 at Lake Barrington this weekend.

2022 Northern High Schools Basketball Championships

9/10 Division 1 Boys

The 9/10 Boys, led by Captain Thomas Milner and brilliant play from Oliver Baldock, had a dominant 2-0 start on the weekend, beating Brooks High School convincingly and a 10-point lead over a strong Riverside High School team. The 9/10 Div 1 Boys came into Sunday ready to take on the winner of Launceston Church Grammar School and Brooks High School. Grammar defeated Brooks and looked ready to battle St Patrick’s College. Grammar, led by the scoring of their dynamic duo, was able to keep up in the first half with the game tied. St Patrick’s College's depth and talent shone through with the great defensive work of Alex Zegveld, holding a Grammar star to only 12 points. Oliver Baldock and Fletcher Targett led the way on both ends of the floor, slowing down Grammar while putting on a show offensively. St Patrick’s College held off Grammar, winning the game 47-40.

This setup for the final is a great Scotch Oakburn College vs St Patrick’s College classic. Overall, St Patrick’s was dominant on both ends of the floor, holding Scotch Oakburn College to only 18 points at halftime with great defence played by Thomas Milner, Fletcher Targett, Toby Morrison and Sebastian Page. In the second half, Oliver Baldock amazed the crowd with a dominant 36-point game to seal a St Patrick’s College championship. Thank you to all the parents, officials and players; it was a great weekend, and I am ready for more high-level play at the State Championships.

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, Coach

9/10 Division 1 Girls

The 9/10 Division 1 Girls ended up runners-up. They were undefeated, including a win against the eventual champions Riverside High School. It was a great performance on the whole, with great ball movement and leadership from our seniors. A tough opponent in the Grand Final, that we look forward to challenging in the State Championships.

Thanks to all players and families for their commitment to St Patrick’s College Basketball.

– Ms Bianca Johnstone, Coach

9/10 Div 2 Boys (Green)

The 9/10 Div 2 Boys Green team was a dominant team of Year 9 students. The team was led by great scoring from Isaiah Stingle, Zane Headland and Oliver Viney. After going undefeated in their pool, the Green team had their biggest challenge in the Kings Meadows High School Year 10 game led by Zeshawn Ricketts, the leading scorer for the competition. After a hard-fought game, Kings Meadows were too strong, winning the grand final 41-47. Thank you to all the parents and players, with a special thanks to Mr Darren Davis for assistant coaching while I was away coaching the 9/10 Div 1 Boys.

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, Coach

9/10 Div 2 Boys (Grey)

The 9/10 Division 2 Grey team coached by the great Mr Michael Sullivan finished the weekend 1-3 after losing by 3 points to Prospect High School, 1 point to Riverside High School, and 16 points to the eventual champions Kings Meadows High and beating St Helens District High School. The team was led by great scoring from Lucas Sullivan and Lenny Faulkner. The boys were enjoyable to watch and played some great competitive games. Thank you to Mr Michael Sullivan for taking the boys for the weekend.

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, PIC Basketball

9/10 Div 2 Boys (Stripe)

The boys started off hot in game one with a 25-point win over school rival Scotch Oakburn College. The boys then faced their biggest challenge of the weekend against mastermind coach Mr O’Toole’s team. After a slow start, the boys regrouped and were able to cut the lead to just 3 points twice throughout the game, but it was all too little too late, with the boys falling just short. The following day included two big wins, both exceeding 30 points. This included my highlight of the tournament – every player on the team hitting a 3-pointer in the last game – despite Nicholas Saunders leaving it ‘til the final buzzer to make the shot after a mere 25 attempts. Full credit goes to the boys and their efforts over the tournament; they were truly a pleasure to coach.

– By Mr Matthew Saunders, Coach

9/10 Division 2 Girls

St Patrick’s started the weekend with a strong win over Riverside High School. This win was followed up by an 8-point win over Prospect High School. Led by the scoring of Holly Miller and Mackenzie Kilby. The girls had a great weekend finishing 4th, losing to the eventual champions Riverside Gold (by 7 points), then losing the playoff for 3rd against Kings Meadows High School. Thank you to Mr Paul Kilby for coaching the girls, and a big thanks to the girls for putting the team together and representing the College!

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, PIC Basketball

7/8 Division 1 (Gold)

The boys opened the tournament with a couple of big wins in the pool rounds. After a couple of injuries, the boys showed their resilience and defensive focus with a tight win in the semi-final and a competitive game in the Grand Final. The group showed resilience, selflessness, and comradery all weekend regardless of the difficulty of the task in front of them. A big thanks to fill-in coach Mr Angus Kitson who covered Mr Cameron Bailey, who was out sick.

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, PIC Basketball

7/8 Division 1 (Green)

With huge expectations, the Year 7/8 Green team had an exciting start to their tournament with a tight 1-point victory over Riverside. From that point on, their relentless defensive pressure and their dominance on the boards saw them make the final against SPC Gold. A tight contest ensued but strong contributions from our whole roster (including an MVP performance from Hugo Sullivan) saw the boys win the final. Our overall team culture was the secret to the success and included consistent high numbers from team captain Sam Percival and Xavier Davie, good outside shooting numbers from Alex Millwood and Jaxon Owens, defensive shutdowns by Hugo Sullivan and Jacob Singline and strong support from Oliver Austen and Riwaz Subedi. Well done boys on your deserved victory.

– By Mr Scott Brown, Coach

7/8 Division 1 Girls

The 7/8 Div 1 Girls began the Northern School Championships in great form with convincing wins on Saturday against Grammar, Deloraine and Queechy. The girls played solid defensive games and capitalised on a good fast-breaking game with accurate shooting. The team's depth makes it hard for opponents to find weaknesses to penetrate their defence on the court.

Over Grammar (35-11)

Top scorers: Hawkins 9, McInerney 8, Graham 8. Best players: Graham, Reynolds, Gardner, Hawkins

Over Deloraine (40-30)

Top scorers: Graham 14, Gardner 11, Richards 7. Best players: Graham, Powell, Gardner, Richards

Over Queechy (44-16)

Top scorers: Reynolds 11, Graham 10, Hawkins 7. Best players: Reynolds, McInerney, Powell, Hawkins

On Sunday, the girls had to travel to the Scotch Oakburn courts for the final pool game. This was an exceptionally close tussle that could have gone either way, with the lead changing several times. The speed and athleticism of the St Patrick’s team had them ahead at halftime, but by 3/4 time, Scotch was up by 1 point. The girls worked hard to have the lead with two minutes to go, but foul trouble resulted in some timely foul shots to Scotch, and a few shots that just rimmed out saw our opponents finally take the game by 1 point.

Defeated by Scotch Oakburn (25-26)

Top scorers: Graham 8, Fox 6. Best Players: Fox, Graham, Powell, Gardner, Pyke.

The Grand Final was a second showdown with Scotch Oakburn, another defensive battle. Scotch had the early form and quickly moved to an 8-0 lead. After settling down, St Pat’s regrouped and upped the pressure to take a few interceptions and, with a few fast breaks and fouls on the shooter, managed to narrow the margin. There were some great defensive efforts from Ruby Powell, Ali Reynolds and Amber Richards, but Scotch had done their homework on our full-court press and started using their height against us very well with some solid rebounding and scoring.

Jasmine Graham showed some real grit and lifted the team in the last minute to get an interception, scoring and hitting a foul shot to get within a point, but Scotch scored again and time ran out.

Defeated by Scotch Oakburn (23-19)

Top Scorers: Graham 11, Richards 2, Gardner 2, Reynolds 2, Powell 2, McInerney 2. Best Players: Graham, Powell, Pyke.

The girls did a fantastic job, and can't wait to turn things around at the State Championships!

– By Ms Gina Poulton, Coach

7/8 Division 2 Boys

The 7/8 Div 2 Boys team played like absolute champions on the weekend. They worked together to show the best parts of the St Patrick's College spirit. They were unlucky and missed out on a place in the final but convincingly won three out of four games. All players are to be commended for their efforts.

– Mr Chris Denton, Coach

7/8 Div 2 Girls (Green)

The girls had an amazing weekend with four impressive wins leading into their Grand Final match. In a nail-biting game led by the scoring of Caitlin Reed, the girls were up 2 points heading into the final term. In a very intense and back-and-forth game, the Kings Meadows girls were able to get the win by 1 point in what was an amazing final. A big thank you to all parents and also Ms Tanya Coombes for stepping in to coach at late notice.

– By Mr Harri O'Toole, PIC Basketball

7/8 Div 2 Girls (Gold)

Put together at late notice, the girls started the weekend with a tough one-point loss to Riverside and ended their Saturday night with a 20-20 draw! Their final game was against the St Patrick's Green team and in a hard-fought game, they came up short. A big thanks to Mrs Kate Mackrell for coming in and coaching the team on late notice.
